Bases Loaded

Each week this section will feature three stories from around the baseball world and a preview of the weekly story in the works. Each base will focus on a different facet of the game. First base will focus on news from college and amateur baseball, second base will feature an update from the world of minor league and independent ball and third base will feature  interesting news from any level of America’s pastime.

First Base- The University of Kansas Jayhawks released their 2013 schedule last Wednesday. The season opens on Feb. 15 in Arizona. The Jayhawks will play their first conference game March 15 at TCU.

Second Base- Rawlings announced the winners of the 2012 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for Minor League Baseball Thursday. The Kansas City Royals’ minor league system was represented by left- fielder Derrick Robinson. Robinson plays for the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Royals.

Third Base- Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona reached an agreement on a 4-year contract with the Cleveland Indians. Francona was fired after last season when the Red Sox blew a nine game lead in September to miss the playoffs on the final game of the season. His father, Tito Francona played for the Indians from 1959-1964

Stepping into the box- I will look at Tommy John surgery and what young people can do to avoid needing it.
